This Soviet poster, “The Last Hour” (1920), captures the decisive struggle of the revolution at the height of the Civil War. A great red star forms the hand of a clock, striking down the generals, monarchists, and politicians whose hour has run out—Wrangel, Denikin, Kolchak, Yudenich, Kerensky, Nicholas II, and others. Each face is crossed out, marked for defeat.
At the base of the poster, a swarm of capitalists in top hats stumbles and flees, crushed beneath the weight of the advancing revolution. The bold geometry, limited palette, and powerful symbolism reflect the urgency of agitational art in its clearest form: history is on the march, and the ruling classes are being swept away.
